It always starts with spaces
Inspired by the places we live and work in, I design timeless pieces that tell a story.
That story belongs to the people using my designs everyday, making it their own.
I see objects and spaces in relationship to each other, which is why I love designing
for a specific location in mind, for the people using it.
The results are minimal and adaptable yet significant objects and spaces that last.
Materials and techniques lead the process
I work with materials hands-on, exploring their constraints and possibilities. A lifelong learner, I constantly experiment with new techniques. Curiosity brings me to uncharted territories and inspires new pieces.
With the help of talented makers and collaborators, I have shaped wood, turned metal, polished stone, cut leather and so on. I juxtapose materials to best highlight their texture and shape, composing pieces with great attention to detail.
Repurposing construction materials allows me to reduce waste in the design process.
This is my story
Born and raised in Brussels, I crossed the channel at 18 to further my Art & Design education in Cambridge. I moved to London the following year to pursue a BA in Interior and Spatial Design from Chelsea College of Arts. After gaining some experience in exhibition and product design, I moved to the US to start a masters degree at the Rhode Island School of Design. Focused on the Adaptive Reuse of architecture, this program also allowed me to take electives in furniture and jewelry design.
This led me to work with design studio Bower upon graduation, and they introduced me to many new techniques and makers in the Brooklyn design community. My dreams of founding my own studio got real concrete when I received an acceptance letter from the prestigious SaloneSatellite in Milan for the following Spring.
AVANDI was born in Brooklyn in 2014. The name is simply a contraction of my first initial and last name, Ariane van Dievoet. My first collection debuted in Milan that same year, and I was humbled to receive third prize for the SaloneSatellite award. Since then, I have exhibited my work in Brussels, Paris, London, Miami, Köln, Toronto and New York, while selling in over 30 shops, such as the Guggenheim Store and the Vitra Store.
After running AVANDI in Brooklyn for 5 years, I decided to move back to Brussels. Since I’ve been back, I worked on a couple construction sites and witnessed the great amount of waste generated by the industry. I’ve decided to reclaim some of the surplus to create new pieces. This way, no new materials need to be produced for my collections.
My promise to you
The materials I use are selected thoughtfully so you know you’re not hurting the planet;
They already have a story and you get to continue it;
They are durable so you know you can keep your pieces forever.
I produce in limited editions so you know you won’t find the same products everywhere;
I select my collaborators carefully so you know you’re buying ethical products;
I work with independent makers so you can be proud to support small businesses.
In collaboration with talented people
Collaborations fuel my practice, which has been enriched by amazing makers and designers.
